Wheel Cylinder

Do you have fluid drips on the inside of the tires?  Do the brakes "stick" when comming to a normal stop causing a wheel to abruptly stop rotating and squealing the tire?  Do you hear squeaking, rubbing or grinding noises coming from one or more wheels while you're stopping?  Then you probably have brake problems and you could have a bad wheel cylinder.

Wheel cylinders, used on old-style drum brakes, are part of the brake hydraulic system.  Drum brakes are still used on the rear wheels of some newer vehicles.  Here's how they work:  When you push on the brake pedal, the brake master cylinder pushes brake fluid through pipes and hoses into the wheel cylinders located on each wheel.  This pushes the pistons out, pushing the brake shoe against the inside of the brake drum.  The rubbing of the shoes onto the inside of the brake drums slows and stops the vehicle.
